Football World Mourns as Diogo Jota and Brother Die in Tragic Car Crash
PORTO, Portugal – July 3, 2025 – The football community is in deep mourning following the shocking news that Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother, André Silva, 25, were killed in a devastating car accident in Spain on Thursday. The incident occurred near Zamora when the Lamborghini they were traveling in veered off the A-52 highway and burst into flames.
The news has sent shockwaves globally, coming just two weeks after Jota had married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three young children. Jota, a crucial player for Liverpool since his arrival in 2020 and a respected figure in the Portuguese national team, leaves behind a profound void in both club and international football. His brother, André, was also a professional footballer.
Reports from Spanish authorities indicate that the high-performance vehicle suffered a suspected tire blowout while attempting to overtake, leading to it losing control and igniting. Emergency services swiftly responded, but tragically, both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene. It's understood that Jota had recently undergone lung surgery and was reportedly traveling by car to avoid flying due to medical advice.
Tributes have poured in from all corners of the football world. Liverpool FC issued a statement expressing their devastation and requesting privacy for the family. The Portuguese Football Federation also conveyed their profound sadness, recognizing Jota as an "extraordinary person" in addition to being an "amazing player." Teammates, former clubs, and fans worldwide have shared messages of grief and condolence.
The funeral for both brothers took place on Saturday, July 5, in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal. Family, friends, and numerous teammates from both Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, including Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, and Bruno Fernandes, attended to pay their respects.
The loss of Diogo Jota and André Silva is a heartbreaking blow, reminding the football world of the fragility of life and the immense talent that has been tragically lost too soon.
