President Mahama Declares Friday, July 4, Public Holiday
Accra, Ghana – June 29, 2025 – In a move set to provide Ghanaians with a long weekend, President John Dramani Mahama has officially declared Friday, July 4, 2025, a public holiday. The declaration, made through an Executive Instrument (E.I.) in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2021 (Act 601), is to observe Republic Day.
While Republic Day itself falls on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the President’s decision aligns with recent legislative amendments aimed at rationalizing Ghana's public holiday schedule. Parliament recently approved the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which among other changes, stipulates that midweek holidays falling on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays will now be observed on the closest Friday. This measure is intended to create more extended weekends, fostering economic activity and providing citizens with greater opportunities for rest and recreation.
The Ministry of the Interior, in a statement signed by Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, confirmed the President's directive and urged all citizens to observe the holiday nationwide.
Republic Day holds significant historical importance for Ghana, commemorating the nation's transition to a republic on July 1, 1960, severing its last colonial ties with the British Empire. This day was previously a statutory public holiday until 2019, when it was reclassified as a commemorative day. However, President Mahama had earlier announced his intention to reinstate July 1 as a statutory public holiday, describing it as "a moment of deep historical and spiritual significance for the nation."
The reinstatement and subsequent shift of the observation day to Friday, July 4, underscore the government's commitment to both honoring national heritage and enhancing the well-being of its citizens. Ghanaians can now look forward to a three-day weekend, from Friday, July 4, to Sunday, July 6.
